Mock Legislature
Mock Legislature is held under the direction of the State 4-H Ambassadors and their Advisor, Craig Dart. It is held at the Utah State Capitol building in the House Chambers.
The day begins with guest speakers, a lesson on the legislative process, and committee meetings. A luncheon will be served also. The second half of the day includes a tour of the building, the Rules Committee deciding the order of the bills to be presented, and a two and a half hour debate over the 15 bills that the youth presented.
Guest speakers highlight their experiences and knowledge of the United State's Government. Past speakers have included: Spencer Stokes of Stokes Strategies; David Bird, an attorney and professional lobbyist; and the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives.
Utah 4-H has the support and direction of Representative Paul Ray. Members of the Office of Legislative Research help guide our youth through the legislative process. Throughout the day, Utah Representatives and Senators constantly look in on the proceedings and comment on the success of the program.
To get a feel for what Mock Legislature is all about, listen to this April 25th, 2011 UPR Newsline segment, by Landon Hemsley, who interviewed Representative Paul Ray on the 4-H Mock Legislature experience.
